Taking Pictures

Best 12 bucks I’ve ever spent on a book. Work these last few...ok months! Have been so...boring! Not to mention empty. Everyone seems to be more interested in going to Doncaster...or even Northland...why? Because my work is a hole.
Meanwhile, people like me who work in retail have to find ways to entertain themselves seeing as we do all the jobs in the morning because there is nobody in the shop to serve and badger into buying a book...”for the love of god just buy something!!” and one day...I will say that!
So cleaning up the bargain table (nobody even wants bargain books) I came across this title “Taking Pictures” and admittedly I only took it up the front to read because of the cover...they say “never judge a book by its cover” but come on...we all do it! Bunny, you may insert your argument in a comment!
“Taking pictures” is about women from all over the world expressing their feelings about men. Their lack of understanding and at times even, understanding them too well. All short stories are written by the same author Anne Enright but every woman is so different and interesting. It reminded me so much of the book “Bombshells” where the theme was “women on the edge.” The reason being because like all the women in bombshells, the women in Taking Pictures all seem to be enraged by the end of their story. It’s gothic in its language which surprised and pleased me at the same time because it seemed so much like a chick-flicky book. You know like Kathy Lette’s “how to kill your husband (and other handy household tips)” or even Cecilia Ahern’s collection of stories.
All in all, if you liked Bombshells you’ll love this one. For such a bargain book I think I won with an easy quick read to get me through the day. Plus, unsurprisingly I could relate to some of the characters which makes every book all the better.
However, 4 out of 5. Why, because honestly, it wasn’t amazing. It certainly wasn’t a bad read and quite frankly I’m happy it’s OKAY considering I paid 12 bucks for it! But no stand out story...and one I wouldn’t ever pay $32.95 for...which is what it originally was.

  1. I loved Bombshells so maybe i shall have to try out this book out!! THe only thing is, i''m not a big fan of short stories. :P I just don't understand them - you get so into the storyline, into its characters and complications, but then it just suddenly finishes!! It ain't fair!!!
And don't worry, i'm a firm believer that 99% of the worlds literature population judge a book by its cover. No matter how much we hate the action, all of us can admit to it. The only problem is, that i have wasted rather a lot of time reading books with cool ass covers but with shit storylines... In my opinion - when in doubt, go for the title of the book instead - it never fails!!

  4. You contradicted yourself, yo! You judged the book by it's cover but loved it after reading it. Hence why you shouldn't judge ANY book by its cover =].

I am glad you enjoyed it, though. It sounds like a good read.
